Animals – Real or Imaginary – Attract Kids’ Attention

Several GeoTrax sets either include miniature animals or can easily have such animals added to them. A set like the Railside Farm Co. doesn’t actually have an animal minifig to play with (unless you count the rooster on the weather vane or the chicken on the hay loft sticker), but it’s a set that most children would associate with animals.

Other sets, like On the Go Zoo do have animals included. The zoo comes with a lion and an elephant. Why Fisher Price elected to include just those two creatures, I don’t know. They could have created more types of animals or at least have included something like a giraffe or a zebra.

The sets below all have real animal figures in them or are in some way related to animals.

Drive Your Train Past the Railside Farm Company, But Beware the Tractor

B4341 Railside Farm Co.
B4341 Railside Farm Co.

The Railside Farm Co. (B4341), issued from 2003 through 2007, includes a barn with moveable parts and a special farm machinery sign telling you to watch for slow-moving vehicles like tractors.

If you rotate the rooster weather vane on top of the barn, you can open and close the barn doors.

The complete Railside Farm Co. set includes these items.

  • Barn
  • Flatbed Rail Car
  • Straw Bale
  • Straight Rail Track
  • Tractor Sign

Turning the crank attached to the barn makes the treadmill move and makes the gray wheel rotate at the same time. Presumably this is for cleaning out the barn floor, but your child will probably think of other uses for it too.

Ride the Bucking Bronco at the Rope ‘n Ride Ranch

L3136 Rope 'n Ride Ranch
L3136 Rope ‘n Ride Ranch #1

The Rope ‘n Ride Ranch (L3136) is one of the most fun GeoTrax sets to play, in my opinion. There is a bronco that actually bucks when you turn the crank just outside the fence. There is a cowboy and his horse. There is an old steam engine (push train) and more.

This set packs a lot of value into a small space. As always, you can attach the track to any other sets you own. You don’t have to make an enclosed circle as pictured.

This first edition of the ranch was released in 2007 and comes with the following pieces.

  • Stable
  • Fenced Land with Bucking Bronco
  • Train Engine (Old Rust)
  • Engineer / Cowboy (Tex)
  • Flatbed Rail Car
  • 4 Curved Rail Tracks
  • Hay Bale
  • Horse

Make Figure Eights around the On-the-Go Zoo

N4799 On-the-Go Zoo
N4799 On-the-Go Zoo

On-the-Go Zoo (N4799) gets its name from its unique setup. The figure eight track folds in the middle, and the arch between the palm trees becomes a handle. There’s a clasp at the opposite end that holds it shut.

The end of the set showing the walkway amongst the crocodiles is made of stretchy fabric. This means there’s room inside the folded track to store the train cars and the small figures – Leo the zookeeper, the lion, and the elephant.

The trail car’s upper portion tips so you can unload the straw bale and feed the animals. The elephant’s legs and lower body are “dirty” on purpose.

This set was in production from 2008 to 2010. It includes these pieces.

  • Zoo (with storage)
  • Engine (Spots)
  • Trail Car
  • Zookeeper (Leo)
  • Lion
  • Elephant
  • Straw Bale
  • DVD (not shown)

Tex Returns to the Rope ‘n Ride Ranch

P9697 Rope 'n Ride Ranch #2
P9697 Rope ‘n Ride Ranch #2

This is the 2nd release of the Rope ‘n Ride Ranch (P9697). It has three fewer pieces than the set above. There is no cargo car, bale of hay, or horse. The other difference is that the four pieces of rail track all sport the elevation ribbing down the center.

In all other respects, the sets appear to be the same. You still get Old Rust the engine and Tex the ranch hand.

This set was released in 2009 and contains these items.

  • Stable
  • Fenced Land with Bucking Bronco
  • Train Engine (Old Rust)
  • Ranch Hand / Cowboy (Tex)
  • 4 Curved Elevation Rail Tracks
